[Presentation
3rd
SSN Workshop, Tucson, 2013 (pdf)]
The geomagnetic field was quiet to active on December 14. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 310 and 614 km/s under the influence of a high speed stream from CH597.
Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 164.2 (decreasing 12.8 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 134.8. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 13 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 12.6). Three hour interval K indices: 34211342 (planetary), 35312332 (Boulder).
The background x-ray flux was at the class B6 level.
At the time of counting spots (see image time) spots were observed in 12 active regions in 2K resolution (SN: 288) and 8 active regions in 1K resolution (SN: 171) SDO images on the visible solar disk.
Region 11917 [S15W22] developed further in the
northern part with a weak magnetic delta structure forming. C and minor M class
flares are possible.
Region 11918 [S10W03] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11920 [N07E09] was quiet and stable.
Region 11922 [N10W74] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11923 [N17W24] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11925 [S07E42] was quiet and stable.
New region 11926 [N08W01] has been slowly emerging for the last few days
and finally developed a trailing polarity spot, thus making it possible to split
this off from AR 11920.
Spotted regions not numbered by SWPC:
S2897 [N15W37] was quiet and stable.
S2911 [N17W15] was quiet and stable.
New region S2918 [S25E32] emerged with a penumbra spot.
New region S2919 [N33E08] emerged with a penumbra spot in an old plage
area.
New region S2920 [S26W47] emerged with a penumbra spot.
December 13-14: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO
and
STEREO imagery.
December 12: A partial halo CME (full halo in STEREO-B) was observed
after the C4 event in AR 11912. This CME could have an Earth directed extension.
A filament eruption the the south of 11917 was associated with a partial halo
CME, possibly with an Earth directed extension.
Coronal hole history (since October
2002)
Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago:
A large northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH597) was in an Earth facing position on December 11.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is fair.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on December 15 due to effects from CH597 and a possible contribution from CMEs. Quiet to unsettled is likely on December 16 becoming quiet on December 17-18.
Coronal holes (1) | Coronal mass ejection (2) | M and X class flares (3) |
1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the
next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to
green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48
hours.
Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.
Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
