Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet on January 29. Solar wind speed ranged between 355 and 447 km/s.

Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 109.8 (decreasing 24.9 over the last solar rotation). The planetary A index was 6 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 5.5). Three hour interval K indices: 22110122 (planetary), 23221011 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B2 level.

At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 8 spotted regions (in 2K resolution SDO images).

Region 11408 [N08W36] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11410 [N19E36] was quiet and stable.
Region 11411 [S26W03] was quiet and stable.
New region 11412 [S13W41] emerged in the southwest quadrant on January 28 and got an SWPC number the next day.
New region 11413 [N10E36] emerged in the northeast quadrant on January 27 and was noticed by SWPC two days later. The region developed several new spots on January 29.

Spotted regions not reported by NOAA/SWPC:
[S1441] reemerged with a couple of tiny spots on January 29. Location at midnight: S14W18
[S1446] rotated into view at the southeast limb on January 24. Location at midnight: S20E10
[S1453] emerged in the northeast quadrant on January 29. Location at midnight: N21E20

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

January 28-29: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.
January 27: The X1 limb event in region 11402 was associated with a very fast and wide asymmetric full halo CME (in LASCO imagery). Due to the location of the event it is unclear if the extension to a full halo event is caused by backsided or frontsided material. If frontsided there's a chance of a flank CME impact on January 30.

Coronal holes

A trans equatorial coronal hole (CH498) will likely rotate into an Earth facing position on January 30-February 2.

The above coronal hole map is based on a method where coronal holes are detected automatically. While the method may need some fine tuning, it has significant advantages over detecting coronal holes manually. The main improvement is the ability to detect coronal holes at and just beyond the solar limbs. Early results using this method for SDO images over a span of several weeks indicate a good match between coronal holes observed over the visible disk and their extent and position at the east and west limbs. Note that the polar coronal holes are easily detected using this method, the extent and intensity of both CHs are consistent with other data sources.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is poor to very poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on January 30. There's a slight chance of a flank CME impact from the CME observed in connection with the X1 event on January 27. If that occurs, some active and minor storm intervals will be possible. Quiet conditions are likely on January 31-February 1.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue (blue-green) is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
