Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to active on February 28. Solar wind speed ranged between 559 and 712 km/sec under the influence of a high speed stream from CH148.

Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 75.0 (lowest level since August 21, 1997). The planetary A index was 12 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 12.5).

The background x-ray flux is at the class A1-A2 level.

At midnight there were no spotted regions on the visible solar disk. The solar flare activity level was very low. No C class events were recorded during the day.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

February 26-28: No obvious fully or partly Earth directed CMEs were observed.

Coronal holes

A recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH148) was in a geoeffective position on February 23-24. A recurrent coronal hole (CH149) in the northern hemisphere will likely rotate to a geoeffective position on March 4-5.

Processed SOHO/EIT 284 image at 19:36 UTC on February 28. The darkest areas on the solar disk are likely coronal holes.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on March 1 due to coronal hole effects and quiet on March 2-5.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Material from a CME is likely to impact Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along east-west paths over high and upper middle latitudes is fair. Propagation along long distance north-south paths is poor. Trans Atlantic propagation conditions are normally monitored every night on 1470 kHz. Dominant stations tonight: Radio Vibración (Venezuela). Propagation was best on frequencies below 1200 kHz. Most Newfoundland stations had strong signals, as had stations from New York (WBBR 1130, WFAN 660, WEPN 1050 and others). WIOD Miami on 610 had a good signal too.
